How to prepare for liposuction surgery

How to prepare for liposuction surgery

If you're feeling self-conscious about your figure and wish your body looked as it did before, liposuction may be the answer. Not to be confused with a tummy tuck, liposuction is the cosmetic procedure that breaks up and sucks fat from the body. It's a surgery that can be performed in any of the common problem areas, such as the abdomen, thighs, neck, chin, arms, calves, back or buttocks.

Remember: Liposuction is not the answer to losing hundreds of pounds. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, this surgery is best for someone who is looking to lose excess stubborn weight that will not subside with physical activity and a wholesome, healthy diet. Specifically, the perfect candidate:

  • Is within 30 percent of his or her ideal weight who has firm and elastic skin as well as good muscle tone.
  • Doesn't have a life-threatening illness or another medical condition that can impact the healing process.
  • Doesn't smoke, or someone who is willing to drop the habit.
  • Has specific goals that involve body contouring, not someone who wants to lose half of his or her body weight.

Keep these guidelines in mind as you begin to do your research about the surgery.

If you sound like the right candidate for the procedure, read on to learn how to prepare for liposuction:

Undergo a medical evaluation
Before a surgeon will agree to perform the surgery, you must undergo a medical evaluation. This ensures that you're in the proper state of health to go through with the procedure. Without the medical evaluation, the surgeon has the authority to deny your request for liposuction. If you're worried about failing a medical evaluation, start making healthier lifestyle decisions to improve your well-being.

Stop smoking
As stated earlier, changing your habits is one way to ensure you are in shape to get liposuction. One of the common tendencies you must quit is smoking, which is something any doctor would ask of you no matter the procedure. As this habit can have a major impact on your overall health and well-being, it's smart to quit altogether. If you can't stop smoking permanently, at least plan to take a break two weeks before the procedure and two weeks after. Because smoking prevents wounds from receiving enough oxygen, it could slow the healing process after liposuction.

Avoid medications that cause bleeding
HealthGuidance reported that it's important for your blood to be able to clot easily during the procedure. Therefore, it's critical that you stop taking any medications that could thin or increase blood, such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs or herbal supplements. Again, this is crucial to consider a few weeks before the surgery and after.

Stay hydrated
Because of the wound drainage, it's important to remember to stay hydrated after the procedure to streamline the healing process. Preparing in advance can get you in the habit of drinking more water during the day.

Stay hydrated before and after surgery.Stay hydrated before and after surgery.

Get your rest
While you will likely go under general anesthesia for liposuction, it's smart to get to the procedure well rested. HealthGuidance recommended arriving for the surgery in the healthiest condition possible, so avoid staying up late or putting in too many hours at work so you don't get pushed to your breaking point.

Don't shave
Based on the troubled area you're targeting, it's important to avoid shaving the body part that you plan to take care of with liposuction. Shaving within 24 hours of the procedure can cause your hairs to grow inward which can lead to irritation or other health issues in the future.

Achieve lifestyle changes based on provider recommendations
After your consultation, your surgeon may recommend various lifestyle adjustments to prepare for the surgery, such as following a more wholesome diet. This suggestion can help you develop healthier eating habits over time, which can ultimately assist in maintaining the results of your liposuction.

I went to multiple Plastic Surgeons wanting lower eyelid surgery to get rid of intense under eye wrinkles when I smiled. They all said that I didn’t have enough skin for lower eyelid surgery, and they refused to do it on the grounds they all felt it would permanently pull my lower lid down and not help the wrinkles anyway. And that I had to “live with it.” Prior laser treatments did not diminish the wrinkles either, so I was out of options until I found Dr. Adam Summers. He disagreed with the other Plastic Surgeons, and guaranteed it would not permanently pull my lower lid down. He did the upper lids, lower lids, and an upper cheek lift for a great price and I am thrilled with the results. My eyelid is not pulled down and the wrinkles are gone! Just as importantly, the reason I would also recommend Dr. Summers as unlike Plastic Surgeons I’ve had surgery with in the past, he cared just as much for me and my endless questions or concerns postop as he did before I paid him. He even told me preop that if any wrinkles remained he would stand by his work and get rid of them for free. That is the mark of a truly great Plastic Surgeon. I’d also like to acknowledge Melinda, office manager, the nurses and all the staff for going over and above with great customer service. I’m a fan for life!

I am 30 years old and had a breast augmentation with Dr. Summers at the Maryland Plastic Surgery Center. The pre-operative details, surgical procedure and post-operative care are excellent. I couldn’t have asked for better treatment from even the President’s staff! My experience is one that I’ll remember, never regret and wish I had done it sooner.

Dear Dr. Summers, I can’t thank you enough for what you have given me…You have given me much more than a facelift. You have given me a spirit lift, a lift for my soul and heart. Is it possible to operate on one’s soul? I feel that you have. You put in much more than sutures… you have added a lightness, a joi de vivre, and, perhaps more importantly, a thrill of adventure and self-appreciation that years of psychiatric help would fail to accomplish – and all of this flows to my family and friends and those around me. Critics of plastic surgery fail to take this into consideration. My facelift has given me the freedom to concentrate on others without fear or self-consciousness of my looks (or lack of). As humans, sometimes it’s hard to look past outer beauty to see the beauty inside of all of us… Thank you for one less worry!

Everything about this experience exceeded my expectations and none of my fears about having cosmetic surgery came true. The results were completely natural looking–as though the clock had been set back many years and while the before and after results were substantial, the overall effect was just right and nobody even asked whether I had any “work” performed on my face. I am most happy about the fact that the double chin, which I’d had for my entire life, is now gone and I have an actual jaw line.

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your kindness, support and relaxed demeanor over the past several months. You made me feel at ease about my surgery. In the operating room I remember you holding my hand as I was “put to sleep”. As you said, combined surgeries add time, this can create more nausea, prolonged recovery and higher risk of infection. In 6 hours, you performed a breast reduction, abdominoplasty, and liposuction. My recovery although difficult as you said, was uneventful. Six months later, I am so happy, so trusting in you with what I have seen, that I am now considering a lower body lift.
Dr. Summers and the MD Plastic Surgery staff were incredible. Dr. Summers made me feel very comfortable about my procedure, as I was very nervous about having it done. The staff was warm and welcoming, caring, and I could tell they were genuinely interested in my well-being, satisfaction with the results, and recovery. As for the procedure, Dr. Summers did an excellent job, my recovery and results, quite amazing! I recovered fast and now it’s been 7 months and I am SUPER happy with my neck! This procedure has allowed me to feel so much better about myself and given me a new sense of confidence. Thank you MD Plastic Surgery!

Dr. Summers was highly recommended to me from two friends who had been his patients in the past. I was not disappointed. He made me feel comfortable from the moment I met him. His calm demeanor and knowledge set my mind at ease that he would give me the best results possible. Many women get plastic surgery for various reasons and when I explained my reasons to him, he was non-judgemental and caring. He was very helpful in educating me on the silicone implants that I chose and I trusted that he was going to be the best doctor to do my breast augmentation. My overall experience of plastic surgery was excellent. I have more self-confidence and a better body image thanks to him!

I am 5’6″ tall with long blond, curly hair. I work for a real estate company in Maryland as a Lease Administrator. Prior to that, I worked for a Minnesota Senator on Capitol Hill. Even though I work out at the gym frequently, I had a few problem areas, which would not go away. Thanks to Dr. Summers’ cosmetic surgery team at the Maryland Plastic Surgery Center, I’ve had liposuction on my outer thighs, hips and stomach. Now my saddlebags are gone and I was able to buy a pair of hip hugger jeans! I’ll be 45 next month and will almost wear a size 6. I’m planning to return to have my inner thighs done very soon.
