How to prepare for liposuction surgery

How to prepare for liposuction surgery

If you're feeling self-conscious about your figure and wish your body looked as it did before, liposuction may be the answer. Not to be confused with a tummy tuck, liposuction is the cosmetic procedure that breaks up and sucks fat from the body. It's a surgery that can be performed in any of the common problem areas, such as the abdomen, thighs, neck, chin, arms, calves, back or buttocks.

Remember: Liposuction is not the answer to losing hundreds of pounds. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, this surgery is best for someone who is looking to lose excess stubborn weight that will not subside with physical activity and a wholesome, healthy diet. Specifically, the perfect candidate:

  • Is within 30 percent of his or her ideal weight who has firm and elastic skin as well as good muscle tone.
  • Doesn't have a life-threatening illness or another medical condition that can impact the healing process.
  • Doesn't smoke, or someone who is willing to drop the habit.
  • Has specific goals that involve body contouring, not someone who wants to lose half of his or her body weight.

Keep these guidelines in mind as you begin to do your research about the surgery.

If you sound like the right candidate for the procedure, read on to learn how to prepare for liposuction:

Undergo a medical evaluation
Before a surgeon will agree to perform the surgery, you must undergo a medical evaluation. This ensures that you're in the proper state of health to go through with the procedure. Without the medical evaluation, the surgeon has the authority to deny your request for liposuction. If you're worried about failing a medical evaluation, start making healthier lifestyle decisions to improve your well-being.

Stop smoking
As stated earlier, changing your habits is one way to ensure you are in shape to get liposuction. One of the common tendencies you must quit is smoking, which is something any doctor would ask of you no matter the procedure. As this habit can have a major impact on your overall health and well-being, it's smart to quit altogether. If you can't stop smoking permanently, at least plan to take a break two weeks before the procedure and two weeks after. Because smoking prevents wounds from receiving enough oxygen, it could slow the healing process after liposuction.

Avoid medications that cause bleeding
HealthGuidance reported that it's important for your blood to be able to clot easily during the procedure. Therefore, it's critical that you stop taking any medications that could thin or increase blood, such as aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs or herbal supplements. Again, this is crucial to consider a few weeks before the surgery and after.

Stay hydrated
Because of the wound drainage, it's important to remember to stay hydrated after the procedure to streamline the healing process. Preparing in advance can get you in the habit of drinking more water during the day.

Stay hydrated before and after surgery.Stay hydrated before and after surgery.

Get your rest
While you will likely go under general anesthesia for liposuction, it's smart to get to the procedure well rested. HealthGuidance recommended arriving for the surgery in the healthiest condition possible, so avoid staying up late or putting in too many hours at work so you don't get pushed to your breaking point.

Don't shave
Based on the troubled area you're targeting, it's important to avoid shaving the body part that you plan to take care of with liposuction. Shaving within 24 hours of the procedure can cause your hairs to grow inward which can lead to irritation or other health issues in the future.

Achieve lifestyle changes based on provider recommendations
After your consultation, your surgeon may recommend various lifestyle adjustments to prepare for the surgery, such as following a more wholesome diet. This suggestion can help you develop healthier eating habits over time, which can ultimately assist in maintaining the results of your liposuction.

If you're ready to make a change to better health and wellness, schedule your liposuction consultation at Maryland Plastic Surgery today. One of our trusted surgeons will be ready to answer your questions and concerns about the procedure.

I just had my one year follow up appointment with Dr. Summers for my rhinoplasty. I couldn’t be happier with my results! My rhinoplasty was customized to suit my face and does not look “cookie cutter”. My nose looks very natural and suits my face significantly better did than the pre-op version. Dr. Summers is extremely talented and has a great eye for detail. He and his support staff were extremely professional and courteous through the entire process. The surgical facility is state-of-the-art, and extremely well maintained. Overall, I had a fantastic experience with Dr. Summers and would recommend him to anyone seeking rhinoplasty.

Everything about this experience exceeded my expectations and none of my fears about having cosmetic surgery came true. The results were completely natural looking–as though the clock had been set back many years and while the before and after results were substantial, the overall effect was just right and nobody even asked whether I had any “work” performed on my face. I am most happy about the fact that the double chin, which I’d had for my entire life, is now gone and I have an actual jaw line.

In line with the theme of this book, Invisible Worlds, here is our observation of the invisible and visible world created in this office. You demonstrate a love for your work and humanity, which expresses itself in the results that your patients experience. That you have a wonderful team working with you is clearly evidenced by the professional and congenial atmosphere that your staff has conveyed from the first consultation. We are grateful for all the positive changes you have brought into our lives. The good you have given to others will return to you multiplied abundantly.

Dear Dr. Summers, I can’t thank you enough for what you have given me…You have given me much more than a facelift. You have given me a spirit lift, a lift for my soul and heart. Is it possible to operate on one’s soul? I feel that you have. You put in much more than sutures… you have added a lightness, a joi de vivre, and, perhaps more importantly, a thrill of adventure and self-appreciation that years of psychiatric help would fail to accomplish – and all of this flows to my family and friends and those around me. Critics of plastic surgery fail to take this into consideration. My facelift has given me the freedom to concentrate on others without fear or self-consciousness of my looks (or lack of). As humans, sometimes it’s hard to look past outer beauty to see the beauty inside of all of us… Thank you for one less worry!

I am 5’6″ tall with long blond, curly hair. I work for a real estate company in Maryland as a Lease Administrator. Prior to that, I worked for a Minnesota Senator on Capitol Hill. Even though I work out at the gym frequently, I had a few problem areas, which would not go away. Thanks to Dr. Summers’ cosmetic surgery team at the Maryland Plastic Surgery Center, I’ve had liposuction on my outer thighs, hips and stomach. Now my saddlebags are gone and I was able to buy a pair of hip hugger jeans! I’ll be 45 next month and will almost wear a size 6. I’m planning to return to have my inner thighs done very soon.

Dr. Summers was recommended to me by a friend who had breast implants and a tummy tuck at the Maryland Plastic Surgery Center. She was delighted with the results. When she learned that I was interested in some facial work, she immediately told me that the best cosmetic surgeon in town is Adam Summers. She showed me the work he had done for her and I couldn’t believe how incredible she looked. I couldn’t even find her scars. I asked around some more and it turns out that Dr. Summers has quite a reputation for facelift surgery and is one of the few real experts for injections around the face. After my visit with him today, I had to let everyone know that if you are interested in any type of cosmetic procedure or surgery, you MUST visit Dr. Summers at his beautiful medical spa. He offers a complimentary appointment and was right on time. He spent an entire hour with me reviewing my concerns. Although it was late in the day and I know he had been working all day, he was kind and funny (and cute!) and made me feel very comfortable. I had some injections done and I look great. No, I look better than great! Truly, I’m thrilled with the results. This was the first time I had ever had anything done, and Dr. Summers made sure I was comfortable and that it was painless and that I looked just the way I wanted!

I am a 33 year old mother of three and I’ve wanted to have breast augmentation surgery for several years. I went from a large C-cup size to less than a A-cup after have my third child, but two things held me back. One was the fear of things going wrong and the other was financial. One day I sat down to my computer and went online to research cosmetic surgery and I came across Dr. Summers’ website and I am very pleased that I did. Everyone I have come in contact with has been great. I am very pleased with Dr. Summers, he has been nothing short of excellent throughout the entire process. He shows how much he cares for both you and your health from day one. Every member of his staff has been excellent as well. I felt very comfortable and confident throughout the entire process, including the day of surgery. The surgery itself went great, I experienced very little pain, most was managed with Advil instead of the prescription pain killer I was prescribed. I can not say enough how smoothly all of this has gone, I am now three months post-surgery and in a D-cup, and I now have the confidence I always feel I have lacked. For any woman who has gone through what childbirth does to your body or just wants to have breast augmentation surgery, it is more than worth it and I would highly recommend the Maryland Plastic Surgery Center.

Because of a terrible car crash in 1995, I have been unable to breathe correctly and I have not looked like myself for a long time. My breathing became unbearable and then I was so lucky to have found Dr. Summers. My rhinoplasty surgery has changed me so much. My breathing is so much better now and I finally have a bridge on my nose again. I used to think my lungs were not working properly. It is so amazing how much better I can breathe now. I am very happy about my nose, too. I have felt very ugly inside but never let it get me down or change me but now it feels good to look like my old self again. It’s a blessing that I met Dr. Summers and I am so very grateful that I was so lucky to have him as my surgeon. I found out that all the research I did on Dr. Summers is better than I expected…I found that he was the best around, but in my eyes’, he is the best ALL AROUND! Thank you! You have changed my life…
